About

Candice Patricia Bergen was born on May 9, 1946, in Beverly Hills, California, to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and model Frances Bergen. Her early life included radio appearances on her father’s show and attending Westlake School for Girls, followed by studies at the University of Pennsylvania where she pursued art history and creative drawing. Before focusing on acting, Bergen worked as a Ford model and a photojournalist, with her photographs featured in publications like Life, Playboy, and Esquire. She made her film debut in 1966 with Sidney Lumet’s “The Group”, which was a critical and commercial success, launching her acting career.

Throughout the 1970s, Bergen appeared in a variety of films, including “Carnal Knowledge” (1971) and “The Wind and the Lion” (1975). A turning point in her film career was her supporting role in the dramedy “Starting Over” (1979), which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. She further solidified her reputation with her role as photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White in “Gandhi” (1982), for which she received a BAFTA Award nomination. Her career took a significant turn in 1988 with the lead role in the television sitcom “Murphy Brown”, portraying a tough television reporter. This role earned her widespread recognition, including five Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards over its ten-season run, and a later revival in 2018.

Following “Murphy Brown”, Bergen continued to work consistently in both film and television. She appeared in movies such as “Miss Congeniality” (2000), “Sweet Home Alabama” (2002), and “Bride Wars” (2009). On television, she joined the cast of “Boston Legal” from 2005 to 2008, playing the character Shirley Schmidt, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Bergen has also expanded her creative endeavors beyond acting, publishing two memoirs, “Knock Wood” (1984) and “A Fine Romance” (2015), and in 2016, she began painting on handbags, with proceeds benefiting charity. She was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2010.
