Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her mother, June Gamble, was a teacher and property developer, and her father, Robert DeWitt Blanchett Jr., an American advertising executive. At the age of ten, her father died from a sudden heart attack. She pursued her acting education at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), graduating in 1992. Early in her career, she quickly gained recognition on the Australian stage, winning the 1993 Newcomer Award from the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle for her role in “Kafka Dances” and the Rosemont Best Actress Award for her performance in David Mamet’s “Oleanna” in the same year. Her initial screen appearances included roles in Australian television series like “Heartland” (1994) and “Bordertown” (1995), leading to her feature film debut in “Paradise Road” (1997).

Blanchett’s international breakthrough came with her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film “Elizabeth,” earning her a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Award, and her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She later earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for her role as Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator.” A second Academy Award for Best Actress followed in 2014 for her performance in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine.” Throughout her career, Blanchett has appeared in a range of significant films, including “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy as Elf Queen Galadriel from 2001 to 2003, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), “Cinderella” (2015), and “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017). She has also maintained a prominent presence in theatre, serving as co-CEO and artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company from 2008 to 2013 and making her Broadway debut in “The Present” (2017).

Beyond her acting career, Blanchett is actively involved in environmental and humanitarian causes. She has been an ambassador for the Australian Conservation Foundation and a global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 2016. Her work with the UNHCR has included missions to Jordan, Lebanon, and Bangladesh to raise awareness for refugee crises. In 2017, she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for her contributions to the performing arts and her humanitarian and environmental advocacy.
