The Padres decided to trade Chase Headley to New York. The Yankees sent Yangervis Solarte and minor league pitcher Rafael De Paula to San Diego to complete the trade.
Born on May 9, 1984, in Fountain, Colorado, Chase Jordan Headley began his collegiate baseball career at the University of the Pacific before transferring to the University of Tennessee. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school, excelling in both baseball and basketball, and graduated as valedictorian from Fountain-Fort Carson High School. While at Tennessee, Headley earned Academic All-America honors and helped lead the Volunteers to the 2005 College World Series. The San Diego Padres drafted him in the second round of the 2005 MLB draft, marking the start of his professional journey. Headley rapidly progressed through the minor league system, showcasing his talent with the Eugene Emeralds, Lake Elsinore Storm, and San Antonio Missions, where he was recognized as the 2007 Texas League Player of the Year.
Headley made his Major League Baseball debut with the San Diego Padres on June 15, 2007. His career with the Padres saw significant milestones, particularly in 2012, when he garnered both a Rawlings Gold Glove and a Louisville Silver Slugger Award. That season, he led the National League in Runs Batted In (115), a feat achieved by only one other Padre in team history. Headley’s consistent performance and leadership were further recognized when he was unanimously named the Padres MVP by the San Diego chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He was instrumental in offensive categories, setting career highs in hits (173), home runs (31), and runs scored (95) during his tenure with the Padres.
In July 2014, Headley was traded to the New York Yankees. He made an immediate impact, driving in the winning run in his debut game with a walk-off single. He continued to contribute to the Yankees, securing a four-year, $52 million contract in December 2014. Throughout his career, Headley demonstrated versatility, playing at third base, first base, and even designated hitter in later seasons. His dedication was evident in numerous games where he hit game-tying or go-ahead home runs. After several successful seasons with the Yankees, Headley returned to the Padres in 2018 before concluding his professional playing career. He engaged in philanthropic efforts, supporting the Teammates for Kids and Franktown Open Hearts foundations.
