Charlie Booker

Charlton Brooker, born on March 3, 1971, in Reading, Berkshire, grew up in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Oxfordshire. His early career began as a writer and cartoonist for the comic ‘Oink!’ in the late 1980s. He later attended the Polytechnic of Central London, studying Media Studies, though he did not graduate as his dissertation on video games was deemed an unacceptable topic. This early interest in media and technology would later define his professional trajectory. Before his widespread television success, Brooker also contributed as a cartoonist and writer for ‘PC Zone’ magazine and co-founded the second-hand retailer CeX, even designing their logo.

Brooker rose to prominence for his satirical commentary and critical analysis across various media. From 1999 to 2003, he developed the satirical website ‘TVGoHome’, featuring mock TV schedules. He also penned the “Screen Burn” TV review column for ‘The Guardian’ from 2000 to 2010. His television career took off with shows like ‘Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe’ (2006-2008), ‘Newswipe’ (2009-2010), and ‘Weekly Wipe’ (2013-2015), where he offered sharp critiques of television and current affairs. A significant career milestone was writing ‘Dead Set’ (2008), a five-part zombie horror thriller for E4, which showcased his versatility beyond pure commentary.

The most notable achievement in Brooker’s career is the creation, writing, and executive production of ‘Black Mirror’, a science fiction anthology series that first aired on Channel 4 in 2011. The series explores the dark side of technology and its impact on modern society, earning widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards, including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards. Netflix later commissioned additional seasons, expanding the show’s global reach.
