Choir! Choir! Choir! was established in Toronto, Ontario, in 2011 by Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman. The group operates under an open participation model, inviting anyone interested to join and perform as part of the choir. Initially conceived as a one-off event for a birthday party, it evolved into a community that meets regularly. Each session focuses on a single song, with Goldman and Adilman teaching the arrangement to attendees before a live performance. This approach has allowed the group to engage diverse participants, ranging from urban professionals to suburban parents, in communal singing experiences.
The choir gained significant media attention in 2016 for several notable performances. Following David Bowie’s death, their rendition of “Space Oddity” at the Art Gallery of Ontario went viral, leading to invitations to perform at two Bowie tribute shows in New York City at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. In May 2016, nearly 2,000 participants gathered at Massey Hall to perform Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” The group also paid tribute to Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip with a performance of “Ahead by a Century” after his brain cancer diagnosis was announced. In more recent years, Choir! Choir! Choir! has continued to engage with significant cultural moments and collaborate with established artists.
Key milestones include performing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in December 2015 as a fundraiser for Syrian refugees, which sponsored two families. In 2018, they teamed up with David Byrne for an EPIC Night performance of David Bowie’s “Heroes” at New York City’s Public Theatre. That same year, Rick Astley joined the choir for a rendition of his hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.” In 2019, they performed The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” at Nathan Phillips Square for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Campaign, featuring a cancer survivor speaking at the event. During the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, they hosted virtual singalongs featuring various uplifting songs. The founders also led a public singalong of The Tragically Hip’s songs at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and were featured in the fifth season of Canada’s Got Talent in 2025.
