Martin Tyler

Martin Tyler is a highly respected English football commentator and coach, widely recognized for his extensive work covering Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches. After making his commentary debut for Southern Television in 1974, Martin Tyler went on to establish one of the most distinguished careers in sports broadcasting. Tyler’s initial foray into football reporting included ghostwriting for Jimmy Hill’s column in The Times, alongside reporting matches under his own name. His commentary career began unexpectedly when he covered a match between Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday for Southern Television.

This pivotal opportunity led to him becoming a regular commentator, laying the groundwork for a prolific career. Tyler further developed his expertise, moving to Yorkshire Television in 1976 and joining ITV’s team for the 1978 World Cup. In 1981, he transitioned to Granada Television, where he covered all England games and the final of the 1982 World Cup, solidifying his role as ITV’s second-string commentator throughout the 1980s. A significant turning point came in 1990 when Tyler signed with British Satellite Broadcasting’s Sports Channel, which evolved into Sky Sports in 1991.
