Martin Tyler was born on September 14, 1945, in Chester, England. He began his career in football as a ghostwriter for Jimmy Hill’s column in The Times, also reporting matches under his own name. His transition to commentary began unexpectedly in 1974 when, due to an indisposed commentator, Tyler made his debut for Southern Television covering a match between Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday. This initial opportunity led to him becoming a regular commentator, establishing the foundation for a distinguished career in sports broadcasting.
Tyler further developed his commentary career by moving to Yorkshire Television in 1976 and was included in ITV’s team for the 1978 World Cup. In 1981, he joined Granada Television, covering all England games and the final of the 1982 World Cup. Throughout the 1980s, he became ITV’s second-string commentator, covering major tournaments and numerous live Football League matches. His consistent performance and dedication to the craft positioned him for a significant role in the evolving landscape of football broadcasting.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1990 when Tyler joined British Satellite Broadcasting’s Sports Channel, which later became Sky Sports in 1991. He led Sky’s commentary team, spearheading their coverage of the Premier League from its inception in 1992 until 2023. His voice became synonymous with English football, earning him the FA Premier League Commentator of the Decade award in 2003.
