Chris Hardwick

Christopher Ryan Hardwick was born on November 23, 1971, in Louisville, Kentucky. His father, Billy Hardwick, was a professional ten-pin bowler, and his mother, Sharon Hills, was a real estate agent. Hardwick spent his early years in Memphis, Tennessee, where he became the Memphis City Junior High Chess Champion in 1983. He later pursued higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), studying philosophy and graduating in 1993. During his time at UCLA, he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity and became roommates with future collaborator Wil Wheaton. Hardwick’s career began in the mid-1990s as a DJ on Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM and as a television host.

Hardwick gained widespread recognition for co-hosting MTV’s dating show “Singled Out” from 1995 to 1998 with Jenny McCarthy, followed by hosting the syndicated show “Shipmates.” His transition into the digital media landscape marked a significant turning point in his career. In 2010, he launched “The Nerdist Podcast,” which quickly became highly successful and led to the formation of Nerdist Industries. This venture expanded into various platforms, including entertainment spaces, online news, and books, ultimately being acquired by Legendary Entertainment in 2012, where Hardwick served as co-president of Legendary’s digital business. He also produced and hosted popular AMC aftershows like “Talking Dead” (2011–2022) for “The Walking Dead” and “Talking Bad” (2013) for “Breaking Bad,” demonstrating his ability to connect with audiences through pop culture discussions.

Beyond hosting, Hardwick has a diverse background as an actor in film and television, with roles in productions such as Rob Zombie’s “House of 1000 Corpses” (2003) and “Halloween II” (2009), as well as voice acting in animated series like “Back at the Barnyard” (2007–2011) and “Sanjay and Craig” (2013–2016). He wrote and executive produced his stand-up comedy specials, “Chris Hardwick: Mandroid” (2012) and “Chris Hardwick: Funcomfortable” (2016). From 2013 to 2017, he hosted and executive produced the Emmy-winning Comedy Central game show “@midnight with Chris Hardwick” (2015, 2016). Since 2016, he has also hosted NBC’s game show “The Wall.” In 2018, he rebranded “The Nerdist Podcast” as “ID10T with Chris Hardwick,” continuing his long-running podcasting success which reached 1,000 episodes by December 2019. He has received two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media – Social TV Experience.
