Chris McHugh has established himself as one of Australia’s most accomplished beach volleyball players, with a career marked by Olympic representation and multiple Commonwealth Games gold medals. He now leverages his extensive experience in elite sport to inspire and educate through public speaking and community engagement. After making his professional debut in 2006, Chris McHugh rapidly rose in beach volleyball, representing Australia at the U19 World Championships in Poland the same year. He earned an Australian Institute of Sport Scholarship and Senior National Team Selection in 2007, followed by a 5th place finish at the U21 World Championships in England in 2008.
In 2017, he earned a FIVB Shepparton Gold Medallist title and another Australian Championship. McHugh also competed in three World Championships (2013, 2015, 2017), culminating in a historic Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Gold Medal with partner Damien Schumann in 2018. This achievement also marked Australias first male beach volleyball representation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics since Beijing 2008. After his Tokyo Olympic Games appearance in 2021, McHugh continued to excel, securing an Asian Beach Volleyball Championships Gold Medallist title in 2019 and a FIVB World Tour Phnom Penh Gold Medallist title in 2020.
He serves as an AIS Share a Yarn Ambassador, actively fostering connections with the ATSI community. He is also the Vice President of his former club, the Henley Hawks, and participates in the Olympics Unleashed Program as a school presenter, sharing inspiring stories with young audiences. Furthermore, McHugh was an ambassador for the South Australia Be Active Challenge, advocating for children’s health and wellness, demonstrating his commitment to inspiring the next generation.
