Chris Riddell

Chris Riddell is an accomplished British illustrator and author, recognized for his extensive contributions to children’s literature and his role as a political cartoonist, bringing a unique visual perspective to both imaginative narratives and current events. After establishing his professional career as an illustrator for The Economist in the 1980s, Chris Riddell went on to become a distinguished political cartoonist for The Observer in 1995, a role he continues to hold. A graduate of Brighton Polytechnic where he studied illustration, Riddell quickly made a significant impact in children’s literature, co-creating ‘The Edge Chronicles’ series with Paul Stewart starting in 1998. This highly acclaimed series garnered widespread recognition for its intricate illustrations and compelling collaborative storytelling.

In recognition of his profound and lasting impact on the arts, Chris Riddell was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2019 for his outstanding services to illustration and charity. His diverse and prolific career, spanning acclaimed children’s books and incisive political cartoons, underscores his versatility and enduring influence as a leading figure in British illustration and literature.
