About

Chris Riddell was born in Cape Town, South South Africa in 1962. His family returned to England when he was one year old. He displayed artistic talent from an early age, encouraged by his mother who provided him with paper and pens during his father’s sermons. He studied illustration at Brighton Polytechnic, where he was mentored by Raymond Briggs. Riddell began his professional career as an illustrator for The Economist in the 1980s, before transitioning to The Observer in 1995 as a political cartoonist. His early influences included Sir John Tenniel and E. H. Shepard, renowned illustrators of classic children’s books.

Throughout his career, Riddell has authored and illustrated numerous popular children’s books. He is notably recognized for co-creating “The Edge Chronicles” series with Paul Stewart, starting in 1998, which gained acclaim for its detailed illustrations and collaborative storytelling. He has also written and illustrated the “Ottoline” series, with “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” winning the Smarties Prize in 2007. In 2013, his book “Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse” secured the Costa Book Award in the Children’s category. His contributions to children’s literature and political cartooning have solidified his reputation as a versatile and impactful artist.

Riddell received significant recognition with three Kate Greenaway Medals, awarded for his illustrations in “Pirate Diary” (2001), “Jonathan Swift’s ‘Gulliver'” (2004), and “The Sleeper and the Spindle” (2016), making him the first to achieve this distinction. In 2015, he was appointed the UK Children’s Laureate, serving until 2017. His ongoing work includes political cartoons for The Observer, where his caricatures offer acute commentary on political figures. In 2019, Riddell was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to illustration and charity, acknowledging his significant influence and artistic achievements.
