Chris Waddle is one of the country’s most recognisable Soccering stars of the 80s and 90s and as such is an illuminating after dinner speaker who can talk comfortably about his myriad sporting experiences at any after dinner event. Sadly for Chris, he is probably most synonymous with a heart-breaking penalty miss against West Germany in the semi-final of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, just minutes after cracking the ball against the post in normal time when the scores were locked at 1-1.
In Domestic terms, Waddle played for a bunch of teams including Sunderland, Burnley, Torquay, Tottenham, Newcastle United and – rarely for an English player – even made himself at home playing for French side Olympique de Marseille. It was with Marseille he saw most success, wining the French Championship three times, but in England where he was awarded the 1993 Soccer Writers Soccerer of the Year for his consistently excellent performances for Sheffield Wednesday. In his long career, Waddle scored a total of 147 goals but equally memorably, also sang along side his 1990 England teams mates on the New Order penned hit “World in Motion.”
Having played in a number of leagues and with plenty of stories from international Soccer, Chris Waddle now writes for The Sun, works on BBC Radio Five Live and, as a result, is a choice speaker at your sports dinner, award ceremony or business event.
