Chris Weinke was born on July 31, 1972, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He showed athletic talent early, excelling in three sports at Cretin-Durham Hall High. Weinke was highly recruited for football but initially pursued a professional baseball career, playing in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system from 1990 to 1996. During this time, he led the Class A Florida State League and Class AA Southern League in RBIs in 1993 and 1994, respectively. At age 25, he returned to academics and athletics, enrolling at Florida State University in 1997. His college football career at Florida State was marked by significant achievements. In 1998, as a sophomore, he led the Seminoles to a 9-1 record and a No. 2 national ranking before a neck injury ended his season. The following year, in 1999, he quarterbacked the team to an undefeated national championship, culminating in a victory against Virginia Tech in the BCS title game. He threw for 3,103 yards and 25 touchdowns during this successful season.
In his senior year in 2000, Weinke led the nation in passing with 4,167 yards. This outstanding performance earned him the Heisman Trophy, making him the oldest player to win the award at 28. He also received the Davey O’Brien Award and the Johnny Unitas Award. He led Florida State to the Orange Bowl for their third consecutive national championship game appearance. Weinke finished his Florida State career with a 32–3 record and held multiple school records, including most career passing yards and touchdown passes. In recognition of his contributions, his jersey was retired by Florida State in 2001. Weinke also earned a degree in Sports Management and was a two-time ACC All-Academic Team selection.
Weinke was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played with the Panthers until 2006, primarily as a backup quarterback. His NFL career included playing for the San Francisco 49ers in 2007 before his retirement from playing. Following his playing career, Weinke transitioned to coaching. He served as the quarterbacks coach for the St. Louis Rams from 2015 to 2016. He then moved to the collegiate level, working as an offensive analyst for Alabama in 2017, where he was part of a national championship-winning staff. Weinke continued his coaching journey as the running backs coach and later quarterbacks coach for Tennessee. Currently, he holds the positions of assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach at Georgia Tech, continuing to contribute to the sport.
