Christian Michael Leonard Slater was born on August 18, 1969, in New York City. His mother, Mary Jo Slater, worked as a casting agent, and his father, Michael Hawkins, was a soap actor. Slater began his career in show business at the age of seven, appearing on the soap opera ‘The Edge of Night’ in 1976. He later performed in numerous Broadway productions throughout the early 1980s, including a debut as Winthrop Paroo in the 1980 revival of ‘The Music Man.’ His theatrical work also extended to London’s West End, featuring roles in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and ‘Swimming with Sharks.’
Slater’s film debut came in 1985 with a leading role in ‘The Legend of Billie Jean.’ His recognition expanded with his portrayal of Jason “J.D.” Dean in the 1989 film ‘Heathers,’ a role that distinguished him among his peers and drew comparisons to Jack Nicholson. Throughout the 1990s, Slater secured roles in significant cinematic projects such as ‘Young Guns II’ (1990), ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ (1991), ‘True Romance’ (1993), ‘Interview with the Vampire’ (1994), and ‘Broken Arrow’ (1996). His career continued to evolve with a mix of television engagements and film roles, including prominent voice acting work. He notably voiced Pips in ‘FernGully: The Last Rainforest’ (1992) and took on various voice roles in animated series like ‘Archer’ (2014–2023) and ‘Inside Job’ (2021–2022).
A significant turning point in his career arrived with the USA Network television series ‘Mr. Robot’ (2015–2019), for which he received critical acclaim and earned the 2016 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film, with subsequent nominations in 2017 and 2018. More recently, for his role as Mulgarath in ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ (2024), Slater was honored with the Children’s and Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Performer.
