A stalwart of the music media, Julie Dorne Brown, better known as Downtown Julie Brown, is an English-born actress, television personality, SiriusXM DJ, and former MTV VJ. Brown is best known for hosting Club MTV, a music television show that aired from 1987 until 1992. She won the World Disco Dancing Championships in 1979 after winning the UK Disco Dancing Championships.
Brown began a career on British television as a presenter and guest on a variety of children’s shows, including the long-running show Crackerjack, shortly after. Brown also performed as a member of the dance team Zoo on Top of the Pops in the early 1980s.She began her career as a presenter on the pan-European music channel Music Box before going to the United States to work as an MTV VJ and host the Club MTV show in the late 1980s. The premise was similar to American Bandstand, but it included an exclusive dance music lineup. After reading the T-shirt of a camera crewmember who was carrying the cue cards on live television, she coined the phrase “Wubba Wubba Wubba.”
Brown went on to work for ESPN after leaving MTV, conducting on- and off-field interviews with football players. Brown then relocated to Los Angeles to host a gossip show on the E Entertainment channel. In March 1992, she took over as host of the nationally syndicated radio show American Dance Traxx, which aired until December 1993. Walker, Texas Ranger; The Weird Al Show; Battle Dome; Hey Arnold!; I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!; The Eric Andre Show; and RuPaul’s Drag U are among the films and television shows in which Brown has appeared. Brown most recently appeared on the television show Wife Swap in July 2013, before becoming a host on SiriusXM’s ’90s on 9′ channel.
