Christina Rene Hendricks was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on May 3, 1975. Her early life involved frequent relocations due to her father’s work with the U.S. Forest Service, leading her to grow up in Oregon, Idaho, and Virginia. During her teenage years in Twin Falls, Idaho, her mother encouraged her and her brother to participate in a local theater group, where Hendricks discovered an interest in acting, appearing in a production of ‘Grease’. She also nurtured an interest in ballet during this period. At the age of 10, she began coloring her hair red, a change inspired by the book ‘Anne of Green Gables’. She completed her high school studies at a community college after leaving Fairfax High School.
After high school, Hendricks moved to New York City at 18 to pursue a modeling career, which she maintained internationally for nearly a decade, working in New York, London, and Japan until she was 27. She transitioned into acting, initially appearing in commercials for brands like Carl’s Jr. and Dr. Pepper, and featured in Everclear’s 1997 music video for “One Hit Wonder.” Her television acting debut was in MTV’s ‘Undressed’, followed by a recurring role in ‘Beggars and Choosers’ (1999-2001) and appearances in shows like ‘Angel’ (2000), ‘ER’ (2002), and Joss Whedon’s ‘Firefly’ (2002-2003). A significant early role was as Nicolette Ray in the UPN legal drama ‘Kevin Hill’ (2004–2005).
Hendricks achieved widespread recognition for her role as Joan Holloway in the AMC series ‘Mad Men’, which ran from 2007 to 2015. Her performance earned her numerous accolades, including six Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and two Critics’ Choice Awards. During and after ‘Mad Men’, her career expanded to include a diverse range of film and television projects. Notable film appearances include ‘Drive’ (2011), ‘Ginger & Rosa’ (2012), ‘Lost River’ (2014), ‘The Neon Demon’ (2016), and providing the voice for Gabby Gabby in ‘Toy Story 4’ (2019). She also starred in TV series such as ‘Another Period’ (2015–2016), ‘Hap and Leonard’ (2016), ‘Tin Star’ (2017–2019), and ‘Good Girls’ (2018–2021). She continues to be active in both television and film.
