Carlos Huber was born in Mexico City. He pursued studies in architecture at Universidad Iberoamericana and the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris. He later earned a degree in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, graduating with honors. His early career involved designing commercial spaces for Polo Ralph Lauren, where he applied his knowledge of historical aesthetics.
Huber transitioned his focus to perfumery, drawing a connection between preserving physical spaces and recreating historical atmospheres through scent. He was mentored by master perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, studying perfume history, evaluation, and fragrance development. This led him to establish Arquiste Parfumeur, collaborating with perfumers like Flores-Roux and Yann Vasnier to create fragrances that aim to restore authentic historical experiences. The brand has received recognition from organizations such as the Fragrance Foundation and Fashion Group International.
His approach to fragrance involves constructing olfactive environments that align with specific historical eras or natural settings, considering cosmetic history and sensory details. For example, he recreated the scent of a day at Sydney’s rock pools, incorporating notes of gardenias, frangipani, and jacarandas. Arquiste Misfit, a patchouli-based fragrance, was named the 2021 Indie Fragrance of the Year by The Fragrance Foundation, reflecting his method of reinterpreting historical ingredients for a contemporary audience. Huber has also developed fragrances for other brands and maintains his boutique status in a competitive industry.
