Chuck Howley

Named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl V in 1971, Chuck Howley made history as the only player from a losing team to receive the honor, anchoring the Dallas Cowboys’ defense in their narrow 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Colts. This career-defining performance capped a remarkable professional journey that began when he was drafted seventh overall by the Chicago Bears in the 1958 NFL Draft. After playing two seasons with the Bears, a debilitating knee injury in August 1959 led to his temporary retirement and caused him to miss the entire 1960 season. However, Howley made a driven comeback in 1961 when the Dallas Cowboys acquired his rights from the Bears.

He retired in 1973 following a distinguished 15-season career, having accumulated impressive statistics including 25 interceptions, 26 sacks, and 18 fumble recoveries. His profound impact on the Dallas Cowboys franchise was recognized with his induction into the Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1977. Decades later, his enduring legacy and remarkable career achievements were further cemented when he was formally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023, solidifying his status as one of the game’s all-time defensive greats.
