About

Clark Clifton Kellogg Jr. was born on July 2, 1961, in Cleveland, Ohio. His basketball career began exceptionally, attending St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, where his performance is recognized as one of the finest in Cleveland history. A notable moment was his 51-point, 24-rebound game in the 1979 state championship loss, a scoring record that still stands in Ohio high school state finals. His high school achievements also included playing in the McDonald’s All-American and Capital Classic games, and being named Mr. Basketball USA in 1979.

From 1979 to 1982, Kellogg played at Ohio State University, leading the team in scoring and rebounding during his sophomore and junior years. In 1982, he earned All-Big Ten Conference and Most Valuable Player honors, along with All-American recognition. After his junior year, Kellogg entered the NBA draft and was selected eighth overall by the Indiana Pacers in 1982. In his rookie season, he averaged 20.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team and finishing second in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting. He was one of few rookies to achieve 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, leading to an endorsement deal with Converse for his own “Special K” sneaker. However, his professional playing career was cut short due to chronic knee problems after only three full seasons and portions of two others with the Pacers.

Following his NBA career, Kellogg successfully transitioned into broadcasting. He joined ESPN as a basketball analyst in 1989 and later worked for the Big East Network and Prime Sports. In 1993, he joined CBS Sports as a game analyst for the NCAA tournament, becoming a full-time studio/game analyst in 1997. He assumed the role of lead college basketball analyst for CBS Sports in July 2008, working with Jim Nantz and becoming only the second lead college game analyst for the network. In 2014, he returned to his role as a studio analyst. Kellogg has also appeared in the NBA 2K video game series as a co-commentator since NBA 2K9 and was appointed to Ohio State University’s board of trustees in June 2010. In 2025, he will receive the Curt Gowdy Electronic Media Award.
