Claudio Castagnoli

Claudio Castagnoli, born on December 27, 1980, in Lucerne, Switzerland, began his professional wrestling career in 2000 in the independent European circuit. He later moved to the United States in 2004, where he quickly gained recognition for his unique blend of strength and technical skill. Early in his career, Castagnoli formed a notable tag team with Chris Hero, known as the Kings of Wrestling. This partnership saw them achieve significant success, including becoming two-time ROH World Tag Team Champions, two-time CZW World Tag Team Champions, and one-time JCW Tag Team Champions. Their accomplishments led to them being named Tag Team of the Year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter in 2010. Castagnoli also secured individual accolades during this period, notably winning the PWG World Heavyweight Championship.

In 2011, Castagnoli signed with WWE, where he performed under the ring names Antonio Cesaro and later simply Cesaro until 2022. During his tenure with WWE, he captured the WWE United States Championship once, marking his first major singles title in the company. A significant career highlight was winning the inaugural André the Giant Memorial Trophy at WrestleMania XXX in 2014. He continued to collect tag team championships, holding the WWE Tag Team Championship once with Tyson Kidd and the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship four times and the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship once with Sheamus as part of “The Bar.” He also won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship once with Shinsuke Nakamura. After departing WWE, Castagnoli made his debut for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2022, re-establishing his Claudio Castagnoli persona. He quickly became a member of the Blackpool Combat Club and continued his championship success by becoming a two-time ROH World Champion and a one-time AEW World Trios Champion with Pac and Wheeler Yuta. He is renowned for his impressive in-ring strength and technical ability, often incorporating European uppercuts and giant swings into his matches.

Beyond his in-ring achievements, Castagnoli is recognized for his professional demeanor and multi-lingual capabilities, speaking English, German, French, Italian, and Swiss-German. He has been consistently lauded by peers and critics as one of professional wrestling’s most underrated talents, earning the “Most Underrated Wrestler” award from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter for four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. His commitment to fitness, including CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting, is a testament to his dedication to the sport.
