Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara is a former Sri Lankan cricketer who transitioned from a highly successful playing career to roles in sports administration, commentary, and coaching, offering strategic insights and leadership. He has notably served as President of the MCC and Director of Cricket for the Rajasthan Royals. After making his One Day International (ODI) debut in July 2000 and his Test debut later that month for Sri Lanka, Kumar Sangakkara swiftly became a pivotal figure in international cricket. He contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s victory in the 2001-02 Asian Test Championship and the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy.

Domestically, he was instrumental in the Nondescripts Cricket Club’s Premier Championship win in 2000–01 and the Premier Limited Overs Tournament in 2001–02. His early international career also saw him reach the semi-finals of the 2003 Cricket World Cup and secure the 2004 Asia Cup. Sangakkara played a central role for the Sri Lankan national team, reaching Cricket World Cup finals in 2007 and 2011. In 2006, he and Mahela Jayawardene set a world record for the highest partnership in Test cricket, scoring an unprecedented 624 runs against South Africa.

He made history in October 2019 by becoming the first non-British President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), a role he held until September 2021. In January 2021, Sangakkara was appointed Director of Cricket for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, leading the team to the 2022 IPL final. His distinguished career was further recognized in June 2021 with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
