Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Chokshanada Sangakkara was born on October 27, 1977, in Matale, Central Province, Sri Lanka. He played first-class cricket for Nondescripts Cricket Club from 1997–98 to 2013–14 and for Surrey County Cricket Club from 2015 to 2017. Sangakkara debuted in One Day International (ODI) cricket in July 2000 against Pakistan and his Test debut followed later that month. He quickly established himself as a key player for Sri Lanka, primarily as a wicket-keeper-batter. In domestic cricket, he was part of the Nondescripts Cricket Club team that won the Premier Championship in 2000–01 and the Premier Limited Overs Tournament in 2001–02. His early international career saw him contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s victory in the 2001-02 Asian Test Championship and the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy.

Sangakkara continued to play a central role in the Sri Lankan national team across all formats. He participated in multiple Cricket World Cups, reaching the semi-finals in 2003 and finishing as runner-up in 2007 and 2011. He also contributed to Sri Lanka’s success in the 2004 Asia Cup and the 2014 T20 World Cup. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Sri Lanka’s captain across all formats. A significant personal milestone occurred in 2006 when he and Mahela Jayawardene set a world record for the highest partnership in Test cricket, scoring 624 runs against South Africa. He also played in various T20 leagues globally, including the Indian Premier League for Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and had stints with the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League, Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League, and Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League.

After retiring from international cricket in 2015, Sangakkara transitioned into cricket administration and media. He joined Sri Lanka’s international selection committee in 2016 and later became part of Sri Lanka Cricket’s technical advisory committee. He began working as a cricket commentator for Sky Sports in 2018. In a notable administrative role, he became the first non-British President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in October 2019, serving until September 2021. In January 2021, he was appointed Director of Cricket for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, guiding them to the 2022 IPL final. In June 2021, Sangakkara was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the sport.
