About

Born on March 9, 1983, in Nacogdoches, Texas, Clinton Drew Dempsey developed his soccer skills early, often playing in local adult leagues. His talent was recognized when he was recruited by the Dallas Texans, an elite youth club, despite initial financial challenges that nearly halted his participation. A pivotal moment in his youth was the loss of his elder sister, Jennifer, to a brain aneurysm, which deepened his commitment to soccer in her honor. He became a standout midfielder at Furman University, earning NSCAA All-American and All-Southern Conference honors, before being drafted by the New England Revolution in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. In his rookie year, he made 23 starts, scoring 7 goals and earning the prestigious MLS Rookie of the Year award, an MLS All-Star selection, and Man of the Year by the Midnight Riders.

Dempsey’s career advanced significantly when he joined Fulham in the Premier League in 2007 for a then-record fee for an MLS player. At Fulham, he became an integral part of the team, playing a key role in their run to the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League Final. He was recognized as Fulham’s Player of the Season for both the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons, where he was also the club’s top scorer. A notable achievement during his time at Fulham was becoming the first American player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League in January 2012. Following his successful tenure at Fulham, Dempsey moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, scoring 12 goals in his only season.

He returned to Major League Soccer in 2013, joining Seattle Sounders FC as a Designated Player. With the Sounders, Dempsey continued his impactful career, leading the club to win the 2014 Supporters’ Shield and the 2016 MLS Cup. He also represented the United States national team extensively, earning 141 caps and tying Landon Donovan as the top all-time scorer with 57 international goals. He uniquely scored in three different FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014) and was part of three CONCACAF Gold Cup-winning teams (2005, 2007, 2017). Clint Dempsey retired from professional soccer in August 2018 and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2022.
