Mark Nepo was born on February 23, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York. He pursued his academic career, earning a doctorate in English. He then taught for 18 years at the State University of New York in Albany, New York, starting in 1980. During his 30s, Nepo was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. This personal challenge significantly shaped his philosophical outlook, leading him to explore the importance of fully experiencing life while navigating an uncertain future. He later relocated to Kalamazoo, Michigan, continuing his work.
