Clinton Earl Portis was born on September 1, 1981, in Laurel, Mississippi. He played college football for the Miami Hurricanes, where he quickly made an impact, becoming only the second true freshman since 1975 to start at running back. During his freshman year, Portis set a school record with five 100-yard rushing performances, accumulating 838 yards and eight touchdowns. His collegiate career culminated in 2001 when he contributed significantly to the Hurricanes’ BCS National Championship, rushing for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. Portis was also a standout track athlete in high school and college, excelling in events such as the 100 meters, high jump, and long jump, and winning a state championship in the 4 x 400-meter relay.
His professional career began in 2002 when he was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round (51st overall) of the NFL draft. In his first two seasons with the Broncos, Portis rushed for over 1,500 yards each year, setting an NFL record for a running back’s first two seasons with an average of 5.5 yards per carry. He achieved significant milestones during this period, including becoming the youngest player to score both four and five touchdowns in a single game. In 2004, Portis was traded to the Washington Redskins, where he spent seven seasons. Despite initial adjustments to the Redskins’ power-running scheme, he became a key player, breaking the franchise record for most rushing yards in a season with 1,516 yards in 2005. He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2003 and 2008 and was recognized as one of the ’90 Greatest Redskins’.
After retiring from the NFL in 2012, Portis continued his involvement with football, transitioning into coaching. In February 2025, he was appointed as the running backs coach at Delaware State University under head coach DeSean Jackson. Throughout his career, Portis has explored brand partnerships and endorsements, discussing their importance in the ‘Beyond the Game’ podcast series. He has also appeared in TV commercials for Easterns Automotive Group.
