Timothy Olyphant

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1968, Timothy David Olyphant was raised in Modesto, California. He showed early athletic talent as a competitive swimmer, participating in the US National Finalist in the 200m individual medley in 1986. While initially studying at the University of Southern California, he took an elective acting course at UC Irvine that sparked his interest in performance. He later moved to New York City, where he studied acting at the William Esper Studio and began his professional career Off-Broadway. His stage debut in Playwrights Horizons’ production of “The Monogamist” in 1995 earned him the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance.

Olyphant transitioned to film and television, often playing supporting or villainous roles in his early career. Notable early film appearances include a two-minute bit in “The First Wives Club” (1996) and a role in “Scream 2” (1997). His portrayal of a drug dealer in the cult comedy “Go” (1999) earned him positive critical attention and led to other significant roles, such as a detective in “Gone in 60 Seconds” (2000). A turning point in his career came with his casting as Sheriff Seth Bullock in HBO’s critically acclaimed western series “Deadwood” (2004–2006), where he honed his portrayal of a brooding, righteous lawman. This role significantly expanded his audience and challenged his previous typecasting. He later reprised his role in “Deadwood: The Movie” (2019).

From 2010 to 2015, Olyphant starred as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in FX’s “Justified,” a performance that became a career-defining role and earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2011. He also served as a co-executive producer for the series, contributing to its storylines. Demonstrating his comedic range, he had recurring guest roles in television sitcoms like “The Office” (2010), “The Mindy Project” (2013), and “The Grinder” (2015–2016), winning a Critics’ Choice Award for the latter. More recently, he starred in the Netflix horror-comedy “Santa Clarita Diet” (2017–2019) and joined the “Star Wars” franchise as Cobb Vanth in “The Mandalorian” (2020) and “The Book of Boba Fett” (2022). In 2023, he returned as Raylan Givens in “Justified: City Primeval” and is set to star in Noah Hawley’s “Alien: Earth” in 2025.
