Michael Colton Dixon was born on October 19, 1991, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Raised in a middle-class family with his younger sister Schyler, Dixon demonstrated an early passion for music, participating in choir throughout high school. He graduated from Middle Tennessee Christian School in 2010. A devout Christian, he and his sister were part of a Christian rock band called Messenger. Dixon’s musical influences include artists such as Paramore, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Lifehouse, Evanescence, and Skillet. His early experiences performing at worship services, including Saddleback Church, solidified his commitment to a faith-based musical career.
Dixon first auditioned for American Idol in its tenth season alongside his sister, though neither advanced to the Top 24. He later returned for season 11, initially intending to only accompany Schyler to her audition. Judges encouraged him to audition, where he performed David Cook’s “Permanent,” earning him a golden ticket. He progressed through the competition, notably performing Paramore’s “Decode” in the semi-finals and advancing to the Top 13. His elimination on April 19, 2012, came as a surprise given his consistent performance. Following his time on American Idol, Dixon appeared on various television shows, solidifying his public profile and preparing for his debut album.
His post-Idol career began with a signing to EMI CMG Label Group/Sparrow Records in 2012. His debut album, “A Messenger,” was released on January 29, 2013, debuting at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and reaching number one on both the U.S. Christian Chart and U.S. Gospel Chart. He subsequently released several successful singles, including “You Are” and “Never Gone,” both reaching number one on the Christian Digital Sales chart. His second album, “Anchor,” released in 2014, also topped the Top Christian Album chart. Dixon has toured extensively, including “The Miracle Tour” with Third Day and the “Hits Deep Tour” with TobyMac. He continued to release music, such as the album “Identity” in 2017 and an EP titled “Colton Dixon” in 2020 after signing with Atlantic Records. His single “Build a Boat” achieved RIAA Gold certification in 2024, demonstrating his continued success in the Christian music genre and beyond.
