Cristin Milioti was born in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, on August 16, 1985. She developed an interest in acting during middle school at Long Lake Camp for the Arts in New York. Milioti attended Cherry Hill High School East, graduating in 2003, and briefly studied at New York University before focusing entirely on her performing career. Her early work included appearances in national advertising campaigns and bit parts in television productions such as “The Sopranos”. She also dedicated herself to stage work, including a role in the 2007 Broadway production of “Coram Boy” and a nomination for a Lucille Lortel Award for her work in “Stunning” in 2010.
Milioti gained significant theatrical acclaim for her portrayal of Girl in the musical “Once”, performing from 2011 to 2013 on Broadway. This role earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2013. Her career expanded further into film and television, notably playing Teresa Petrillo in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street.” In television, she became widely recognized as the titular Mother, Tracy McConnell, in the final seasons of the CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” appearing first in the 2013 season eight finale and becoming a series regular for the ninth season. She continued to take on diverse roles, including Betsy Solverson in the second season of FX’s “Fargo” in 2015 and Nanette Cole in the “USS Callister” episode of “Black Mirror” in 2017.
More recently, Milioti has taken on leading roles in streaming series, such as Sarah Wilder in the 2020 sci-fi/comedy film “Palm Springs,” Hazel Green in the HBO Max dark comedy series “Made for Love” (2021–2022), and Emma Reed in Peacock’s mystery series “The Resort” (2022). In 2024, she starred as Sofia Falcone in the HBO series “The Penguin,” a performance that earned her a Critics’ Choice Television Award and a Primetime Emmy Award, along with a Golden Globe Award nomination. Her range across these projects demonstrates a consistent career focused on memorable character portrayals in a variety of genres.
