About

Curtis James Martin Jr., born on May 1, 1973, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, overcame a challenging early life marked by violence and hardship. Raised by his mother who worked multiple jobs, Martin was surrounded by unstable environments. A pivotal moment occurred at age 15 when a loaded gun pointed at his head failed to fire, a near-death experience that shaped his perspective. Despite a lack of initial interest in football, his mother’s insistence led him to play during his senior year at Taylor Allderdice High School. Martin quickly excelled, rushing for 1,705 yards and 20 touchdowns in his single high school season, demonstrating natural athleticism.

Martin’s collegiate career at the University of Pittsburgh was hampered by injuries, leading him to enter the NFL draft in 1995. Drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round, he made an immediate impact, rushing for 102 yards and a game-winning touchdown in his debut. He concluded his rookie season as the AFC’s leading rusher with 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and his first Pro Bowl selection. After three successful seasons with the Patriots, during which he also played in Super Bowl XXXI, Martin joined the New York Jets in 1998 as a restricted free agent, a move influenced by his former coach Bill Parcells.

His tenure with the Jets solidified his legacy. Martin achieved ten consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons, a feat shared only with Barry Sanders at the time. In 2004, he led the NFL in rushing with a career-high 1,697 yards, becoming the oldest player at 31 to win the rushing title. Throughout his 11-season, 168-game career, Martin consistently led his team in rushing. He retired in 2007 as the NFL’s fourth all-time leading rusher with 14,101 yards and 90 rushing touchdowns, alongside 3,329 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns. His career culminated in his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Jets retired his No. 28 jersey in 2012. Post-retirement, Martin has been involved in charitable work through the Curtis Martin Job Foundation and has expressed interest in NFL franchise ownership, notably advising the Miami Dolphins on a conduct code committee in 2013.
