Cynthia Erivo was born on January 8, 1987, in Stockwell, London, England, to Nigerian immigrant parents. Her mother, Edith, who was 15 during the Nigerian Civil War, raised Cynthia and her younger sister after her parents separated. Erivo pursued a music psychology degree at the University of East London in 2004 before transferring to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which she graduated in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in acting. Her early career included roles in British television shows like “Chewing Gums” and “The Tunnel,” alongside stage productions such as “Marine Parade” at the Brighton Festival and “I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky” at Theatre Royal Stratford East. In 2013, she gained significant recognition for her role as Celie Harris in the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of “The Color Purple,” a role she later reprised on Broadway.
