Daniel John Bongino was born on December 4, 1974, in Queens, New York City, and is of Italian descent. He pursued higher education, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Queens College, and an MBA from Pennsylvania State University. His career in law enforcement began as an officer with the New York City Police Department from 1995 to 1999. In 1999, Bongino joined the U.S. Secret Service as a special agent, investigating federal crimes. He later became an instructor at the Secret Service Training Academy in Beltsville, Maryland, in 2002. From 2006, he served in the Presidential Protection Division during George W. Bush’s second term and continued protective duties under Barack Obama until May 2011.
Following his law enforcement career, Bongino made three unsuccessful attempts to run for Congress as a Republican: a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland in 2012, a U.S. House seat in Maryland’s 6th congressional district in 2014, and Florida’s 19th congressional district in 2016. Concurrently, he built a substantial media career, guest-hosting prominent radio shows like ‘The Sean Hannity Show’ and ‘The Mark Levin Show.’ He launched the ‘Bongino Report’ in December 2019 as a conservative news aggregator and his podcast frequently ranked among the most popular. In March 2021, Cumulus Media signed Bongino to replace ‘The Rush Limbaugh Show,’ and he also hosted ‘Unfiltered with Dan Bongino’ on Fox News until April 2023. His media presence has been characterized by strong conservative commentary and critiques of liberal political positions.
In February 2025, President Donald Trump appointed Bongino as the 20th Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a role he assumed on March 17, 2025. This appointment followed his departure from commentating roles and marked a significant return to public service at a high level. His tenure has seen notable developments, including a reported consideration of resignation in July 2025 amid an investigation into the death of Jeffrey Epstein, and a subsequent demotion to a ‘co-Deputy Directorship’ role with Andrew Bailey in August 2025. Bongino has also authored multiple books, including ‘Life Inside the Bubble’ (2013), ‘The Fight’ (2016), ‘Spygate’ (2019), and ‘Exonerated’ (2019).
