About

Sir Richard Billing Dearlove was born on January 23, 1945, in Gorran Haven, Cornwall, England. He received his early education at Monkton Combe School in Somerset and Kent School in Connecticut, USA, before pursuing higher education at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in history. Dearlove’s career in intelligence began in 1966 when he joined MI6. His initial foreign posting was to Nairobi in 1968, marking the start of a distinguished career that saw him stationed in various international locations such as Prague, Paris, and Geneva. His progression within MI6 was steady and marked by increasing responsibility. He became head of the Washington station in 1991, followed by his appointment as director of personnel and administration in 1993, and director of operations in 1994. These roles prepared him for the highest office within the Secret Intelligence Service.

In 1999, Sir Richard Dearlove was appointed Chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), a position he held until May 2004. His tenure as ‘C’ was a period of significant global instability, including the September 11th attacks in the United States, the subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and the July 2005 London terrorist attacks. He was intricately involved in the intelligence assessments leading to the Iraq War, an involvement that later drew scrutiny from the Iraq Inquiry, notably concerning the verification of intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction. Following his retirement from MI6, Dearlove transitioned into academic leadership, becoming the Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, on August 1, 2004, a role he fulfilled until 2015. He also took on the chairmanship of the board of Trustees at the Cambridge Union Society in 2006. In addition to these roles, he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the University of London. His contributions to public service were recognized with an OBE in 1984 and a KCMG in 2001.

Throughout his career, Sir Richard Dearlove has been a figure engaged with national security and international affairs. He provided evidence at the inquest into Princess Diana’s death in 2008, addressing claims made by Mohamed al-Fayed. He has also been involved in various advisory capacities, including as a senior advisor to the Monitor Group and later joining the advisory board of Ergo, an intelligence and advisory firm. His later years have included public commentary on geopolitical issues, such as mass foreign migration, and critical views on government policies, including the Brexit withdrawal agreement and the role of Huawei in UK infrastructure. He has consistently emphasized the importance of national security and the intelligence community’s role in safeguarding it.
