Daniel Stahl

Daniel Ståhl, born on August 27, 1992, in Solna, Sweden, has established himself as a dominant figure in the sport of discus throw. His career began in athletics, with early participation in events like shot put and discus. In 2009, he competed at the World Youth Championships, followed by the World Junior Championships in 2010. His progression continued with an appearance at the European U23 Championships in 2013, where he placed fourth in discus throw. Ståhl made his mark on the world stage in 2015, finishing fifth at the World Championships in Beijing. The following year, despite not qualifying for the final at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, he demonstrated his potential by setting a new personal best and the world-leading throw for 2016 at the Swedish Championships, reaching 68.72 meters.

Ståhl’s career saw a significant turning point in June 2017 when he surpassed the Swedish national record in discus throw with a mark of 71.29 meters, a distance unmatched globally since 2013. This achievement was followed by a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships in London, where he narrowly missed gold. He continued to collect accolades, earning another silver medal at the 2018 European Championships. Ståhl’s ascent to the top culminated in 2019 when he won his first World Championship title in Doha, Qatar, with a throw of 67.59 meters. His ultimate achievement came at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, where he secured an Olympic gold medal with a throw of 68.90 meters, leading a Swedish one-two finish. He further solidified his legacy by winning the World Championships in 2023 in Budapest, setting a new championship record of 71.46 meters, and again in 2025 in Tokyo, securing his third world title with a throw of 70.47m. His personal best in discus throw stands at 71.86 meters, achieved on June 29, 2019, in Bottnaryd, Sweden, which is also a national record. Beyond his athletic achievements, Daniel Ståhl is recognized for his Finnish heritage, deriving from his mother, a former discus thrower herself, and is a fluent Finnish speaker.
