The following year, he qualified for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but was unable to get to the final. He competed at the Swedish Championships in Sollentuna only a few weeks after his loss in Rio. Ståhl also won the shot put the day before with a new personal best of 19.38 metres.
Ståhl broke his own personal record and surpassed by three centimetres Rickard Bruch’s 1984 Swedish record with a throw of 71.29 metres in Sollentuna in June 2017. Ståhl won the silver medal in the discus throw competition at the 2017 World Athletics Championships with a throw of 69.19 metres. The Lithuanian Andrius Gudius defeated him by a margin of two millimetres.
At the 2018 European Championships, where Ståhl took home the silver medal, Andrius Gudius defeated him once more. He defeated fellow countryman Simon Pettersson for the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics with a throw of 68.90 metres.
