About

Daniel Michael DeVito Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in Neptune, New Jersey. His early experiences included working as a cosmetician in his sister’s beauty salon, which led him to enroll at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where he discovered his passion for acting. In 1968, he secured a minor role in “Dreams of Glass,” marking his film debut. Discouraged by the film industry’s initial offerings, DeVito transitioned to Off-Broadway productions, making his debut in 1969. A significant turning point came in 1975 when he appeared in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” alongside Jack Nicholson, a role that brought him national recognition, though it did not immediately accelerate his film career.

DeVito’s career gained substantial momentum in 1978 with his casting as Louie DePalma in the ABC sitcom “Taxi.” His portrayal of the character earned widespread critical acclaim, including an Emmy Award. This television success paved the way for prominent film roles in the 1980s and 1990s, including “Romancing the Stone” (1984), “Ruthless People” (1986), “Throw Momma from the Train” (1987), and “Twins” (1988). Beyond acting, DeVito demonstrated his talents behind the camera, directing films such as “The War of the Roses” (1989) and “Hoffa” (1992). In 1992, he took on the iconic role of The Penguin in “Batman Returns,” further solidifying his status as a versatile performer. That same year, he co-founded Jersey Films with Rhea Perlman, a production company responsible for films like “Pulp Fiction” (1994), “Get Shorty” (1995), and the Oscar-nominated “Erin Brockovich” (2000).

His career continued to evolve with a return to series television in 2006, joining the cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” which introduced him to a new generation of viewers. In 2012, he lent his voice to the title character in “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.” DeVito also made his West End stage debut in 2012, followed by a Broadway debut in 2017 in Arthur Miller’s “The Price,” for which he received a Tony Award nomination. He continues to actively engage in acting, directing, and producing, showcasing a sustained and diverse professional presence in the entertainment industry.
