Erin Rachael Doherty, born on July 16, 1992, in Crawley, West Sussex, cultivated an early interest in acting alongside her older sister, Grace. After her parents’ divorce when she was four, Doherty enrolled in Sunday drama classes. She attended Hazelwick School in Crawley and initially showed promise in football, even captaining the Crawley Wasps and being scouted by Chelsea Women. However, she ultimately chose to pursue acting, a decision that led her to undertake a one-year course at the Guildford School of Acting (2011-2012) before continuing her training at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (2012-2015).
Doherty’s professional career began in theatre, where she quickly gained critical acclaim. In 2015, while still a student, she won the Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Award. Post-graduation, she became a frequent presence on London’s leading stages, with her performances consistently drawing positive reviews. Notably, Michael Billington, a prominent theatre critic, hailed her as “one of the year’s greatest discoveries” following her role in ‘My Name Is Rachel Corrie’ (2017). Her transition into screen roles began in 2016 with an appearance in ‘Call the Midwife’, followed by a role in the BBC miniseries ‘Les Misérables’ (2018). The turning point in her television career came in 2019 when she was cast as Princess Anne in the third and fourth seasons of Netflix’s ‘The Crown’, a role for which she meticulously prepared. In 2022, she starred as Becky in the BBC/Amazon Prime drama ‘Chloe’.
