Darnell Dockett

Darnell Maurice Dockett was born on May 27, 1981, in Atlanta, Georgia. His early life was marked by personal tragedy, losing both parents by age thirteen; his mother was murdered, and his father died of cancer four months later, leading him to be raised by his uncle, Kevin Dockett. Dockett’s football journey began relatively late, as evidenced by an anecdote from his first youth league game where he ran the wrong way with a fumble. He attended Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, Maryland, where he set a school record with 47 career sacks. As a senior, he achieved 171 tackles (109 solo), 15 sacks, two caused fumbles, and an interception returned for a touchdown, earning Maryland Player of the Year honors and All-American selections from USA Today and Parade.

Dockett then matriculated at Florida State University, where he played for the Florida State Seminoles football team. After redshirting his first year in 1999, he secured a starting role at defensive tackle in 2000, recording 66 total tackles and tying for the team lead in tackles for loss with 19, along with seven sacks. These achievements earned him freshman All-America honors. In 2001, he led all defensive linemen with 68 total tackles and set a new Florida State single-season record with 22 tackles for loss. He was a first-team All-ACC selection. By his junior season, he broke Ron Simmons’ 22-year-old school record for career tackles for loss, accumulating 65 by the end of his college career.

Despite an outstanding collegiate career, Dockett fell to the third round (64th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft, selected by the Arizona Cardinals, reportedly due to concerns about past arrests and issues with coaching staff. He played defensive tackle for eleven seasons, primarily with the Arizona Cardinals (2004–2014) and a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers (2015). His professional career included three Pro Bowl selections (2007, 2009, 2010) and a Second-team All-Pro selection in 2009. He retired in 2016, signing a one-day contract to formally conclude his career as an Arizona Cardinal.
