Darren Lyndon Espanto was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on May 24, 2001. He is the first child of Filipino registered nurses Marinel Gonzales and Lyndon Espanto, who emigrated to Canada from Nueva Vizcaya province in the Philippines. Espanto began singing at the age of three. His family encouraged him to pursue singing as a career after recognizing his talent. In 2012, at age ten, Espanto auditioned for the fifth season of YTV’s reality television competition, “The Next Star,” performing Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.” He reached the Top 6, becoming the youngest finalist in the show’s history. He released his singles “Gotta Give A Little Extra,” “Now,” and “Oh Oh Santa” with the other finalists. In 2013, he made his acting debut in a guest-starring role on YTV’s “Life with Boys.”
In 2014, Espanto gained prominence after joining the first season of “The Voice Kids Philippines.” For his blind audition, he performed Jessie J’s “Domino,” prompting both coaches Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo Mañalac to press their buttons. He chose Sarah Geronimo as his coach. He advanced to the finals after performing Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time” during the live semi-finals. In the finale, he placed second after Lyca Gairanod. After “The Voice Kids,” Espanto decided to remain in the Philippines to pursue his career, signing with ABS-CBN’s Star Magic talent agency in August 2014.
His self-titled debut album, “Darren,” released under MCA Music Inc. (Philippines) in December 2014, debuted at number one on Apple’s iTunes Store Philippine charts and later achieved Double Platinum certification. He became the youngest performer to stage a solo event at the Mall of Asia Arena on May 29, 2015, for his birthday concert. Espanto performed during Pope Francis’s visit to the Philippines in January 2015 and sang the official theme for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in 2015, titled “This is Only the Beginning,” composed by Ryan Cayabyab. His sophomore album, “Be With Me,” released in 2016, achieved Platinum status and yielded several popular singles. He released a deluxe edition of “Be With Me” in 2017, featuring bonus tracks and collaborations.
