About

Jack Davenport was born in Suffolk, England, in 1973, the son of actors Maria Aitken and Nigel Davenport. He spent his early childhood in Ibiza, Spain, before attending the Dragon School and Cheltenham College. He later studied Literature and Film Studies at the University of East Anglia. His entry into acting began somewhat unconventionally; after writing to John Cleese seeking a crew position on “Fierce Creatures” (1997), he was instead cast as a zookeeper. This led to his first significant role as barrister Miles in the BBC series “This Life” (1996), which brought him early recognition.

His career saw a significant progression with roles that garnered international attention. These included playing a modern-day vampire hunter in “Ultraviolet” (1998) and Peter Smith-Kingsley in the critically acclaimed film “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999) where he acted opposite Matt Damon. Davenport became widely recognized for his role as Commodore James Norrington in the global box office hit “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003) and its sequels, “Dead Man’s Chest” (2006) and “At World’s End” (2007). On television, he also played a key role in the US drama series “Smash” (2012-2013), where he portrayed Derek Wills, a theatrical director, further expanding his presence in American productions.

Throughout his career, Davenport has maintained a presence across various media. He has performed in theatre, making his Broadway debut in “Saint Joan” (2018) and returning to the London stage in “The Human Body” (2024). His voice work includes narrating audiobooks and documentaries, such as “The 39 Steps,” and providing the voice-over for British MasterCard advertisements. Recent television credits include “The Morning Show” (2019), “Why Women Kill” (2019-2021), “Ten Percent” (2022), and “Dr. Death” (2023), demonstrating his continued activity and adaptability in the entertainment industry.
