David Alvarez-Gonzalez was born on May 11, 1994, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Raised by Cuban parents, with his father, David Alvarez-Carbonell, working as a biology and chemistry professor and his mother, Yanek, as an actress and theater director, Alvarez was exposed to a diverse cultural and artistic environment early on. He is fluent in French and Spanish. His family relocated to San Diego, California, where he began to seriously pursue classical ballet at the California Ballet. In 2005, Alvarez received a full merit scholarship to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), leading his family to move to New York City. During his time at ABT, he performed in significant roles in productions such as ‘The Nutcracker’ at the Kennedy Center Opera House and ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ at the Metropolitan Opera House, continuing his ballet training until 2012.
Alvarez’s Broadway debut was a pivotal moment in his career when he was cast as one of the original Billys in ‘Billy Elliot the Musical’ in 2008. This role required extensive training in tap, acrobatics, voice, and acting. His performances garnered critical acclaim from notable figures such as Ben Brantley and Claudia La Rocco of The New York Times and Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times. In 2009, at just 15 years old, he, along with Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, making him one of the youngest recipients of the award. After retiring from the role in January 2010, Alvarez shifted his focus, serving two and a half years in the US Army with the 25th Infantry Division. He returned to theater in 2015 as a swing in a production of ‘On the Town’.
His career expanded into television and film with roles such as Isaac English in Showtime’s ‘American Rust’ from 2021 to 2024. A significant screen achievement came when he was cast as Bernardo in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation of ‘West Side Story’, a role that showcased his dance and acting abilities on a global scale. He is also set to portray Gael Rodriguez in the upcoming TV series ‘Étoile’ in 2025.
