Courteney Cox

Courteney Bass Cox was born on June 15, 1964, in Birmingham, Alabama. Raised in an affluent Southern family, her early life took a turn with her parents’ divorce in 1974. She attended Mountain Brook High School, where she participated in various activities including cheerleading and tennis, and had her first modeling experience in an advertisement for Parisians. Following graduation, Cox moved to New York to pursue a modeling career, signing with the prestigious Ford Modelling Agency. She appeared on the covers of teen magazines and in numerous commercials for brands such as Maybelline, Noxzema, the New York Telephone Company, and Tampax. During this period, she also took acting classes, driven by her ambition to become an actress.

Cox’s career began to gain momentum in 1984 with a small role in “As the World Turns.” Her significant break came when she was cast by Brian De Palma in Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 music video for “Dancing in the Dark.” Moving to Los Angeles in 1985, she starred in “Misfits of Science.” A few years later, she was cast as Lauren Miller, Michael J. Fox’s girlfriend, in “Family Ties” from 1987 to 1989. After a period of less prominent roles, her fortune changed dramatically in 1994 with a starring role alongside Jim Carrey in the hit film “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” The same year, she secured her most iconic role as Monica Geller in the critically acclaimed sitcom “Friends,” where she rose to international stardom over its ten-season run until 2004. “Friends” earned her an American Comedy Award nomination and, by its final two seasons, made her one of the highest-paid TV actresses, earning $1 million per episode alongside her co-stars.

Following her success with “Friends,” Cox continued to diversify her career. In 1996, she starred as reporter Gale Weathers in Wes Craven’s horror film “Scream,” a role she reprised in its sequels in 1997 and 2000, and later in 2011, 2022, and 2023. These films brought her critical acclaim and further established her as a versatile actress. Her involvement with the “Scream” franchise also led to her meeting and marrying actor David Arquette in 1999, with whom she later co-founded Coquette Productions. Cox later transitioned into producing and directing, with notable projects including executive producing the TV drama series “Dirt” from 2007 to 2008, and starring in and executive producing “Cougar Town” from 2009 to 2015, which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination. Her directorial debut came with the television film “TalhotBlond” in 2012, followed by the black comedy film “Just Before I Go” in 2014. More recently, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, acknowledging her lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
