About

David Joseph Campbell OAM, born on August 6, 1973, in Adelaide, South Australia, is an Australian singer, actor, and television personality. As the son of rock and roll singer Jimmy Barnes, Campbell’s early life involved navigation of a complex family background, having been raised by his maternal grandparents and mother. He discovered his biological father’s identity later in his teenage years. Despite a challenging start, Campbell developed an early interest in performing arts, undergoing extensive youth theatre training and earning an Australia Day award for his contributions to youth stars in 1993. His professional career commenced in Australia, where he quickly gained recognition for his role in the play ‘Relative Merits’ and a MO Award nomination for Best Musical Theatre Performer of the Year in 1995 for ‘Only Heaven Knows’.

Campbell expanded his career internationally in 1997, performing in the Tony Award-winning ‘Love! Valor! Compassion!’ in New York. In 2000, he provided the singing voice for the character Joseph in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Joseph: King of Dreams’. A significant turning point in his Australian career was playing rock and roll legend Johnny O’Keefe in the musical ‘Shout! The Legend of The Wild One’ in 2001, which established him as a household name. His stage work continued with roles in productions such as ‘Carousel’, ‘Sunset Boulevard’, and ‘Company’, receiving a Helpmann Award for Best Male Actor in a Musical for his role in ‘Sunset Boulevard’ in 2006. In 2016, he won his second Helpmann Award for Best Male Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Bobby Darin in ‘Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical’.

Beyond the stage, Campbell has built a successful recording career with multiple platinum-selling albums, including ‘The Swing Sessions’ (2006), ‘The Swing Sessions 2’ (2007), and ‘Good Lovin” (2008), all reaching the top ten on the Australian charts. His album ‘On Broadway’ was released in 2010, accompanied by a television documentary. Concurrently, Campbell has become a prominent television and radio personality in Australia. He co-hosted ‘Today Extra’ (formerly ‘Mornings’) on the Nine Network since 2011 and has been a host for Vision Australia’s ‘Carols by Candlelight’. He also hosts weekend afternoons on smoothfm.
