David Kaplan, born in 1960 in Chicago, Illinois, is a prominent American sports media figure. He graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a bachelor’s degree in English. His career in sports began beyond broadcasting, serving as an assistant coach for the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team from 1982 to 1986 and later working as a scout for two NBA teams, the Indiana Pacers and the Seattle SuperSonics. These early experiences provided a foundational understanding of the sports world that would later inform his extensive media career.
Kaplan transitioned into broadcasting, starting at WMVP-AM before joining WGN (AM) in 1995 as a sports reporter. At WGN, he hosted “Sports Central,” which became a top-rated sports talk show in Chicago. He co-hosted with former Chicago Bears star Tom Waddle for over a decade, a partnership that marked the longest-running sports talk duo in the city’s radio history. His television presence grew with “Chicago Tribune Live” on Comcast SportsNet (CSN) from 2008, a show that earned him an Emmy Award in 2009 for Best Interview Program. The show was later rebranded as “Sports Talk Live,” which he hosted until its conclusion in 2020.
His career also includes significant roles with ESPN, where he signed a multi-year contract in 2015 to host “Kap and Co.” on ESPN 1000. He currently co-hosts “Kap and J. Hood” on the same station. Kaplan also continued his television work with “Unfiltered with David Kaplan” on NBC Sports Chicago from 2022, a program where he discussed trending sports and pop culture. He hosts “The Football Aftershow” following Chicago Bears games and maintains a popular YouTube channel, “The REKAP,” where he provides post-game analysis for various Chicago teams. His contributions to sports media were recognized with his induction into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 2021, along with multiple Emmy and other industry awards.
