About

Born in Flushing, Queens, New York, on November 2, 1966, David Lawrence Schwimmer was raised in Los Angeles. Encouraged by a high school instructor, he attended a summer acting program at Northwestern University, a pivotal experience that led him to return there for his higher education. In 1988, after graduating from Northwestern with a Bachelor’s degree in speech/theater, Schwimmer co-founded Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company with seven other graduates. He then moved back to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career, making his television debut in the film ‘A Deadly Silence’ in 1989. Early television roles included appearances in ‘L.A. Law’ (1992), ‘The Wonder Years’ (1992–1993), and ‘NYPD Blue’ (1993), before landing his first regular series role in ‘Monty’ (1994).

Schwimmer achieved widespread recognition in 1994 when he was cast as Ross Geller in the NBC sitcom ‘Friends.’ His portrayal of the paleontologist became an iconic role, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1995 and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. During his time on ‘Friends,’ which concluded in 2004 after ten seasons, Schwimmer also began directing, helming ten episodes of the show. His film career during this period included leading roles in ‘The Pallbearer’ (1996), ‘Kissing a Fool’ (1998), ‘Six Days, Seven Nights’ (1998), and ‘Apt Pupil’ (1998). He also played Captain Herbert M. Sobel in the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries ‘Band of Brothers’ (2001).

Post-‘Friends,’ Schwimmer continued to diversify his career. He lent his voice to Melman the Giraffe in the successful animated ‘Madagascar’ film franchise (2005, 2008, 2012) and directed his feature film debut, the British comedy ‘Run Fatboy Run’ (2007). He also directed the drama ‘Trust’ (2010), starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener. On stage, he made his West End debut in ‘Some Girl(s)’ (2005) and his Broadway debut in ‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ (2006). In 2016, Schwimmer received his second Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his role as Robert Kardashian in ‘American Crime Story: The People v. O. J. Simpson.’ He has maintained an active presence in television with roles in ‘Intelligence’ (2020–2023) and ‘Goosebumps’ (2023). Beyond entertainment, Schwimmer is a dedicated advocate, serving on the Board of Directors of The Rape Foundation for 25 years and actively combating antisemitism, having provided an “erudite” contribution to the 2022 documentary ‘Jews Don’t Count’.
