David Wain is an American comedian, actor, director and writer. He was born in 1969 in Shaker Heights Ohio. His parents are Nina and Norman Wain and his family are from a Jewish background. He developed an interest in performing at college where he was a member of a comedy troupe. While he was at the famous New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts the group he founded went on to be known as ‘The State’. The group’s show went on to last 26 episodes on MTV. He formed the comedy trio ‘Stella’ with some members of ‘The State’. They wrote and starred in short films and had a TV series.
Wain has co-written and directed a variety of feature films. His first film was Wet Hot Indian Summer in 2001. It was a comedy about a summer camp said to be based on his own summer camp experience. Further films he worked on include Ten, starring Winona Ryder, Role Models which starred Seann William Scott, Wanderlust and more recently A Futile and Stupid Gesture.
Wain has worked as an actor and producer on TV. He is executive producer of the Emmy award winning series ‘Children’s Hospital’, he has worked on ‘Newsreaders’ and ‘Medical Police’. As an actor he has appeared for example on ‘Children’s Hospital’ and as a version of himself in the semi-autobiographical web series ‘Wainy Days’. Wain has two sons with Zandy Hartig and lives in Los Angeles.
