Abigail “Abbie” Cornish was born on August 7, 1982, in Lochinvar, New South Wales, Australia. She grew up on a 70-hectare farm before her family moved to Newcastle, New South Wales. Cornish began modeling at the age of 13, achieving recognition after reaching the finals of a Dolly Magazine competition. Her acting career commenced early, and in 1999, she received the Australian Film Institute Young Actor’s Award for her role in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s television series “Wildside.” This achievement led to her first feature film role in “The Monkey’s Mask.”
Cornish gained significant critical attention for her performance as Heidi in the 2004 film “Somersault,” earning her the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actress at the FCCA and IF Awards, and Best Breakthrough Performance at the 2005 Miami International Film Festival. She continued to build her filmography with notable roles, such as the titular character in the drama “Candy” (2006) alongside Heath Ledger, Bess Throckmorton in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2007), and Fanny Brawne in the John Keats biopic “Bright Star” (2009). Her career progressed with diverse roles, including “Sweet Pea” in the action film “Sucker Punch” (2011) and Lindy in the science fiction thriller “Limitless” (2011) alongside Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. She also worked with writer/director Martin McDonagh in “Seven Psychopaths” (2012) and the critically acclaimed “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017), for which she received her first Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the cast.
Beyond her acting career, Cornish is also a rapper, singer, and songwriter, performing under the name Dusk since 2000. She was part of an Australian hip-hop group from age 18 to 22. In 2015, she supported American rapper Nas on his Australian tour and released original music on SoundCloud. Cornish has also taken on executive producer roles in projects like “Detained” (2024). In 2006, she became an ambassador for the Australian animal rights group Voiceless, participating in a national advertising campaign in 2012, highlighting her commitment to animal protection.
