Dawson Alan Knox was born on November 14, 1996, in Brentwood, Tennessee. He attended St. Paul Christian Academy and Brentwood Academy, where he played wide receiver and quarterback. His senior high school season was limited to one game due to an ankle injury. Knox began his college career at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 2015 as a walk-on fullback. He later transitioned to tight end and played for Ole Miss until 2018, accumulating 39 receptions for 605 yards. Following his junior season in 2018, Knox opted to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL Draft.
Knox was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the third round, 96th overall, of the 2019 NFL Draft. He signed his rookie contract with the team on June 14, 2019. In his debut season in 2019, Knox caught his first NFL touchdown and contributed to a game-winning drive for the Bills. He finished that season with 28 receptions for 388 yards and two touchdowns. In 2020, Knox played in 12 games, recording 24 receptions for 288 yards and three touchdowns, including a touchdown in the Wild Card Round victory against the Indianapolis Colts and another in the AFC Championship against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 2021 season marked a significant professional progression for Knox, as he became a more central figure in the Bills’ passing game. He achieved a franchise record for most receiving touchdowns in a single season by a tight end with nine touchdowns, along with 49 receptions for 587 yards. This strong performance led to a four-year, $53.6 million extension with the Bills on September 7, 2022. In the 2022 season, he recorded 48 receptions for 517 yards and six touchdowns. He continued his career with the Bills through 2025, setting a new team record for most career touchdowns by a tight end and re-signing for three more years in 2026. Off the field, Knox is involved with the P.U.N.T. Pediatric Cancer Collaborative and made a cameo in a Hallmark Channel film in 2025.
