Dean Barker

Dean Barker was part of New Zealand’s successful America’s Cup defense in 2000, helming the final race for Team New Zealand. His introduction to the prestigious competition came in 1995 when Russell Coutts invited him to train with Team New Zealand, after which he became a permanent member of the defense team once the Cup was in Auckland. Following the 2000 victory, Barker further solidified his standing in competitive sailing by becoming the Match Racing World Champion in 2001. By 2003, he had taken on the pivotal role of skipper and helmsman for the America’s Cup defender Team New Zealand, establishing himself as a formidable leader in high-stakes yacht racing.

From 2018 to 2021, Barker continued his America’s Cup journey as helmsman for American Magic, the challenge from the New York Yacht Club, participating in the 2021 America’s Cup. Beyond his active competitive sailing career, Dean Barker remains deeply involved in the sailing industry as a major shareholder in Kiwi Yachting Consultants, reflecting his enduring commitment and influence in the sport.
