Jonathan Neil “Jonty” Rhodes was born on July 27, 1969, in Pietermaritzberg, Natal, South Africa. He established himself as a prominent figure in international cricket, playing for the South African national team from 1992 to 2003. Known for his right-handed batting and right-arm medium bowling, Rhodes primarily excelled as a middle-order batsman. However, his defining characteristic was his defensive fielding, particularly his agile catching, effective ground fielding, and powerful throwing from the backward point position. His career highlight in fielding came on November 14, 1993, when he set a world record by taking five catches in an ODI against the West Indies in Mumbai.
Rhodes made his Test debut against India on November 13, 1992, at Kingsmead, Durban. He scored his first Test century, an unbeaten 101, against Sri Lanka during the 1993–1994 season, contributing to a draw that secured a series victory for South Africa. His One Day International (ODI) debut occurred on February 26, 1992, against Australia during the 1992 Cricket World Cup. A significant moment in his ODI career came on March 8, 1992, during a World Cup match against Pakistan, where a spectacular run-out of Inzamam-ul-Haq showcased his athletic prowess and became an iconic image in cricket history. Rhodes also represented South Africa in hockey and was selected for the 1992 Olympic Games squad, though the team did not qualify.
After retiring from Test cricket in 2000 and ODIs in 2003 due to an injury sustained during the 2003 Cricket World Cup, Rhodes transitioned into coaching and commentary. He served as the fielding coach for the South African national cricket team, as well as for Indian Premier League (IPL) teams like Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). In September 2020, he signed a contract with the Swedish Cricket Federation. Currently, he is the fielding coach for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and Durban’s Super Giants, and acts as a consultant fielding coach for the Sri Lanka national cricket team. In 2024, he also took on the role of mentor for Pokhara Avengers in the Nepal Premier League (NPL).
