Deandre Edoneille Ayton Sr. was born on July 23, 1998, in Nassau, The Bahamas. He began playing basketball in the fourth grade and by age 12, had grown to 6 feet 5 inches. Ayton moved to San Diego, California, to pursue his high school basketball career, attending Balboa School where he led the varsity team to a 17–14 record in 2014–15, averaging 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 6.9 blocks per game. He then transferred to Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix, Arizona, for his junior and senior years. During his junior year (2015–16), he averaged 29.2 points, 16.7 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game. As a senior in 2016–17, he guided Hillcrest to a 33–6 record, earning Finals MVP and season MVP at the Grind Session World Championship. A consensus five-star recruit, Ayton committed to play for the Arizona Wildcats.
Ayton played one season of college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats (2017–2018), showcasing his talent with averages of 20.1 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. He earned numerous accolades, including Pac-12 Player of the Year, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and consensus first-team All-American honors in 2018. His collegiate performance positioned him as a standout prospect for the NBA Draft. In 2018, Ayton was selected by the Phoenix Suns as the first overall pick in the NBA draft, making him the franchise’s first No. 1 pick and the first player to be drafted first overall from the state where he played high school and college.
Throughout his NBA career, Ayton has played for the Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2019. A significant milestone in his career was helping lead the Suns to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1993 during the 2020–21 season. He continued to achieve personal bests, including a career-high 35 points in March 2022 and 23 rebounds in October 2023. In 2023, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers and subsequently signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025, continuing his journey as a prominent center in the league.
