Monté Morris was born on June 27, 1995, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and grew up in Flint, Michigan. He attended Flint Beecher High School, where he excelled in basketball, leading the Beecher Buccaneers to back-to-back Class C Michigan state titles in 2012 and 2013. During his high school career, Morris was a three-time winner of Michigan’s Associated Press Class C Player of the Year Award and a three-time all-state selection. He consistently led his team in scoring, assists, and steals across all four seasons. In 2013, Morris was awarded Michigan’s Mr. Basketball title, solidifying his reputation as one of the nation’s top point guards. Ranked as a highly touted recruit by Rivals.com, Scout.com, and ESPN, he committed to Iowa State.
At Iowa State University, Morris further distinguished himself as a collegiate athlete. He quickly earned a starting position during his freshman year in 2014, showcasing his playmaking abilities by dishing out 134 assists, the third-most by any freshman in school history, and leading the Big 12 freshmen with 46 steals. Morris notably broke the NCAA record for assist-to-turnover ratio multiple times, setting a new record of 5.21 in his senior year. He earned All-Big 12 Second-Team honors twice (2015, 2016) and First-team All-Big 12 in 2017. His senior season led Iowa State to a 5th seed in the NCAA tournament. He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the second round, 51st overall pick, of the 2017 NBA draft.
Morris commenced his professional NBA career with the Denver Nuggets in 2017, initially on a two-way contract, splitting time with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League. He averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game with the Vipers before making his NBA debut in December 2017. Over five seasons with the Nuggets, he became a key rotational player, demonstrating reliable performance. In 2022, he was traded to the Washington Wizards, where he started 61 of 62 games. Following a trade to the Detroit Pistons in 2023, and then to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2024, Morris signed with the Phoenix Suns in July 2024, continuing his tenure in the league.
