DeMarius Copes, originally from Fairfield, Alabama, began his dance training at the age of fifteen. His early theatrical experience included performances at the Virginia Samford Theatre, Red Mountain Theatre, and Shades Valley High School. He later attended Rider University. Copes earned his Actors’ Equity membership during the 2014-2015 national tour of “Newsies,” marking an early milestone in his professional acting career.
His career progression includes notable engagements in significant pre-Broadway and Broadway productions. In 2016, Copes performed in “The Prom” prior to its Broadway run. He then joined the Washington, D.C. premiere of “Mean Girls” in 2017, subsequently making his Broadway debut with the show when it opened in New York in April 2018. Following his departure from “Mean Girls” in June 2019, Copes joined the touring company of “Hamilton” in August 2019, further expanding his presence in major theatrical productions. His film work includes the role of Oliver in the 2021 film adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen.”
In 2022, Copes was part of the original Broadway cast for “Some Like It Hot.” He received positive reviews for his performance when he stepped into the role of Jerry/Daphne as an understudy, covering for J. Harrison Ghee. He departed from “Some Like It Hot” in the fall of 2023. More recently, in 2024, Copes was cast in New York City Center’s production of “Once Upon a Mattress” as part of the ensemble and as the Jester, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to live theatre.
