Dennis Mark Prager was born on August 2, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in a Modern Orthodox Jewish home, attending the Yeshiva of Flatbush and later Brooklyn College, where he earned a B.A. in Anthropology and History in 1970. He continued his education as a fellow at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs from 1970 to 1972, also taking courses at the University of Leeds. His early career involved political activism, starting in 1969 with efforts to assist Soviet Jews denied emigration, known as Refuseniks. He became a national spokesman for the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, lecturing extensively and traveling to approximately sixty countries. In 1975, Prager co-authored “The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism” with Joseph Telushkin, a book that gained significant readership.
From 1976 to 1983, Prager led the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, his first salaried position, where he became known for his moral commentary against secularism and narcissism. In 1982, he began his radio career hosting “Religion on the Line” on KABC (AM) in Los Angeles, which achieved high ratings and evolved into a weekday talk show. He continued his collaboration with Telushkin, publishing “Why the Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism” in 1983. Prager also contributed a syndicated column to newspapers and launched his quarterly journal, “Ultimate Issues,” in 1985, later renamed “The Prager Perspective” in 1996.
Throughout the 1990s, Prager’s media presence grew. He hosted a syndicated television show via Multimedia Entertainment during the 1994–1995 season. Since 1999, he has hosted “The Dennis Prager Show,” a nationally syndicated talk show on the Salem Radio Network. In 2009, Prager co-founded PragerU alongside Allen Estrin, an educational organization that produces short videos advocating conservative viewpoints. He has authored several books, including “Happiness Is a Serious Problem” (1999) and “The Rational Bible” series, with commentaries on Exodus (2018) and Genesis (2019).
