Doug Christie

Born Douglas Dale Christie on May 9, 1970, in Seattle, Washington, Christie was raised by his mother. He excelled in basketball from a young age, leading Rainier Beach High School to its first-ever Washington state championship in his senior year (1988), earning him the title of high school player of the year in Washington. He continued his collegiate career at Pepperdine University, pursuing a sociology degree, where he guided the Pepperdine Waves to two NCAA Tournament appearances and was twice honored as the WCC Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992.

Christie entered the NBA after being selected as the 17th overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. After a contract dispute, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 1993, making his debut that March. His career progression saw him play for several teams, including the New York Knicks (1994–1996) and the Toronto Raptors (1996–2000), where he notably contributed to the Raptors’ first-ever playoff appearance. His most impactful period came with the Sacramento Kings (2000–2005), where he became a starting shooting guard and distinguished himself as one of the league’s top defenders. During his time with the Kings, he earned one NBA All-Defensive First Team selection and three NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors.

After his playing career, Christie transitioned into coaching. He served as a color commentator for Sacramento Kings games on NBC Sports during the 2018–19 season before joining the Kings as an assistant coach in August 2021. In December 2024, he was named interim head coach, with the interim tag removed in May 2025, officially making him the head coach of the Sacramento Kings. Christie has also ventured into other endeavors, including participating in Dennis Rodman’s “basketball diplomacy” in North Korea in 2014 and appearing in reality television shows such as BET J’s “The Christies Committed” and VH1’s “Basketball Wives” alongside his wife, Jackie.
